National Service Scheme (NSS), University of Kashmir organized an online lecture on the theme "Wellbeing Amidst the Pandemic". The lecture aimed to inculcate a holistic approach to wellbeing among the participants by addressing aspects of both physical and mental health.The resource persons for the lecture were Dr. Farzana Shora, General Practioner, NHS, United Kingdom and Dr. Ishaq Pala, Consultant Psychiatrist, Kent And Medway, NHS Trust, United kingdom. In his message, Dr Musavir Ahmed, Programme Coordinator, NSS, said that organising such lectures is the need of the hour to educate people about various aspects of physical and mental health and their importance.
Dr. Farzana Shora in her lecture pointed out the groups specially vulnerable to covid-19, while also spelling out the precautions to be taken in order to avoid getting infected.She emphasised that the best protection against covid -19 is vaccination and urged all participants to get themselves and their families vaccinated.
In his lecture,Dr.Ishaq Pala stressed on the need to de-stigmatise mental ill health and was of the considered opinion to treat patients of mental ill health in the same way as patients of any physical disease.The resource person also suggested measures to keep anxiety at bay during the pandemic. Both the speakers urged the need for setting up pastoral service in the university.Counselling services should be made accessible to students easily and with regularity.Dr.Heena Basharat, organiser of the lecture, observed that the questions posed by the participants bore testimony to the fact that anxiety and depression were widespread among the student population and there was an urgent need to address the same.The proceedings were conducted by Dr. Heena Basharat while the vote of thanks was given by Dr.Yasir Hamid.
