The University of Kashmir on Tuesday organised special lectures to mark the birth anniversary of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, a popular tribal leader, celebrated across the country as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’.
KU’s NSS wing and the Department of Social work jointly organized a special lecture on ‘Life and contributions of great tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda’ for NSS volunteers, students and scholars of various teaching departments.
Dr Shazia Manzoor, Head, the Department of Social work, highlighted the importance of such programmes in disseminating the work and contributions of great freedom fighters and tribal leaders of our country.
Dr Musavir Ahmad, Coordinator NSS and Dr Wakar Amin, Programme Officer NSS, described the overall objective of the event and discussed the importance of remembering the country’s great social reformers. Dr Saima Farhad, Assistant Professor, also spoke on the occasion. The main lectures were delivered by Ms Shabnum Mustaq, Ms Sabreen Majeed and Ms Shabnum Ara, and focussed on making youth aware about the great contributions of our Janjati heroes so that more students are encouraged to imbibe the values and ideas of such great personalities.
The Department of Sociology in collaboration with the Department of Students’ Welfare organized a day-long seminar titled, ‘Changing Narrative of Development Discourse in India’, to commemorate the ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Divas’.
Faculty members, research scholars and students participated in the event where more than fifteen speakers deliberated on various aspects of the theme. The speakers highlighted that the existing policies and progammes of the Government of India related to tribal affairs are playing a vital role in their overall socio-cultural and economic development
